Designer Spotlight: Meet Vaidas, Lithuanian Graphic Designer on DesignCrowd

Vaidas Krisikaitis is a professional designer from the picturesque Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, famous for its cobblestone streets and Baroque architecture. It's no surprise Vaidas loves design, he lives in a beautiful city with it's own UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Vaidas has been a professional designer for more than 10 years of experience and graduated from Vilnius College of Technologies Design (Graphic Design), and Vilnius Academy of Arts (Graphics). To say he is a graphic design expert is no understatement!

But it's not just his city that inspires this designer, Vaidas also relies on his 5 year-old daughter to provide feedback on his projects - she shares his love of the arts and continues to be his best muse and critic.

When Vaidas isn't flexing his creative muscles, he likes to flex his real muscles at the gym and through playing basketball. With loads of design work to keep him on his toes, a happy family life and a pretty city to enjoy, what advice would Vaidas give young designers.

Thinking of what to pursue in life? Vaidas says he goes by the Confucian saying "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

He was the second place winner of our Best New Designer Award in April 2015 where we asked new designers to design a new profile picture. Check out Vaidas' eye-catching design below.

We interviewed Vaidas for this month's New Designer Spotlight segment and discovered what motivates his design work and how we approaches briefs. Enjoy the great tips Vaidas offers new designers!

How do you usually start your projects? Do you have a routine of sorts, a ritual that you methodically go through?

Vaidas:

  1. First of all I go deep into the task.
  2. I think of an interesting and attractive idea. I usually think about ideas for the design brief while listening to the music and playing with my little daughter or even when I'm at the gym.
  3. I analyze what's been designed in the world and what's to come.
  4. Then move into sketching and exploring those ideas on my computer.

How did your passion for illustration start?

Vaidas: I have been interested in illustration since I was very young. I remember that the first time when I succeeded to draw Mickey Mouse myself! I was so impressed with myself :). Since then, I love drawing. I attended the School of Arts [in Vilnius, Lithuania] where I studied Graphic Design at the college, and continued with further study of Graphic art at the Vilnius Art Academy.

How would you describe what you do to someone who hasn’t seen your work?

Vaidas: My favorite area is logo design. I love graphic design that is “delicious”. It just has to have an idea - hidden or apparent. Good design shouldn't leave a person indifferent [to the message being communicated]. The type of professional design I try to create should surprise a little.

Is there a defining influence that made a huge impact on how you work? Who are your greatest influences on your creative style?

Vaidas: From the first acquaintance with the art and the design I admire the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. His posters are great inspiration for my illustrations. I also admire the works of Apple’s design guru, Sir Jonathan Paul Ive. I love Apple's design aesthetics and simplicity. And I'm crazy about the creativity of [Japanese artist ] Tokujin Yoshioka. I think he is a design genius! [ed: so do I!]
